I have worked in Pupil Referral Units for the past 10 years, and am recognised as a national expert in the field of music facilitation in this setting. Having developed a practice in partnership with a host of other collaborators, I lead them in work alongside small groups of students to help develop not only musical skills, but an improved sense of self and self-efficacy. I recently contributed a chapter to the book Reaching Out: Music Education with Hard to Reach Children and Young People, published by Music Mark, which ‘explores what music education policy for the 21st century might involve,’ giving a much-needed insight ‘into the work of music education practitioners and community musicians who are successfully reaching out and engaging young people whose musical needs might otherwise be overlooked.’
