Beneath the Ice is a series of recordings and performances rising out of the Ice Music Festival in Geilo, Norway. Having heard about the festival — where all of the instruments are made of ice — I began to wonder what ice itself sounded like, and what sounds might exist unheard beneath the ice. Through conversations that followed with renowned percussionist and founder of the festival, Terje Isungset, I then found myself in -20C temperatures kneeling on a Fjord, dropping a hydrophone through a foot-deep sheet of ice.

These recordings were then used during the festival at a headlining gig with Isungset as he and I performed alongside trumpeter Arve Henriksen and a selection of Norway's finest musicians under a full moon on a frozen lake.
